Sport Translations: Expert Translators for knowledgeable readers!

 

On the surface, a sport translation may sound like a breeze compared to, say, that of a legal contract, but a closer look reveals that this is not the case.  As in any other field, there are good sport translations and poor sports translations. So how can we make sure that our work falls into the latter category? Firstly, it is essential to have at least some background knowledge of the sport we are discussing - if we know nothing of the rules of a particular game, or we are unwilling to research them, we risk making mistakes that will stand out clearly to a knowledgeable reader. For example, only someone with some specialist knowledge will know when to translate the Italian `punizione` with `penalty` and when to translate it with `free-kick` in Rugby Union.  With a greater knowledge of sport comes greater familiarity with the terminology used in both source and target languages.
